First Scrimmage a Success!

The first basketball Scrimmage, organized by Special Olympics Burlington, Burlington Public Library, Corpus Christi High School and Burlington Parks and Recreation was a fantastic success. It took place on Saturday May 20, at Corpus Christi.18588724_1159338417505838_3064869553106752932_o copy

Burlington’s Special Olympics basketball team, the Flames, played against members of the community, including students from Corpus Christi and two local police officers.

Scrimmage 3Some of our Special Olympics athletes attend Corpus Christi school – and the team was warmly welcomed, with an opening address by the Mayor and Ward Councillor. The afternoon was live streamed on You Tube, to promote inclusivity while creating awareness for the wonderful friendships and community that we are a part of!

New Golf Team – The Eagles!

Burlington Special Olympics is adding yet ANOTHER team to it’s ever-growing family of sports this year – golf.

Some of the 10 athletes have never played golf before; others can already hit the ball a good distance. In this inaugural season our golfers will be learning etiquette, the rules of the game, how to use all the different clubs to play different shots – and of course having a great time together on the course.

The Eagles and Coaches – Ready to Play!

Burlington Springs Golf Club will be hosting the team each Tuesday night throughout the summer – and a Professional Golfer will be joining in to teach each week. Each athlete will have a 1 to 1 volunteer to assist and drive their golf cart.

Head Coach Andy Wilks has played golf since he was a teenager, when he took up the sport alongside his Dad. Andy coached the youth team at Royal Ascot Golf Club in the UK and is very excited to be back teaching a very keen brand new golf team!
